Do children with diabetes also need special footwear?

Share |

Children usually don't need a special diabetic shoe because children don't initially have as many diabetic problems as adults.

Type I diabetes is also called juvenile diabetes. Some children are born with the gene and later become diabetic. In these cases, the child should have a special diet and are usually insulin dependent.

There are also children now being diagnosed with type II diabetes because of their diet and lifestyle. Usually, type II diabetes is not diagnosed until a person is in their 50's, but because of not eating properly and being overweight, many children are becoming diabetic.

However, it's rare for a child to have a ulcerations on their feet as a symptom of diabetes, but as they grow into their teenage years, a doctor should be consulted about their needs.
